Get Your Home Ready for Winter

Whether you’re getting excited about the winter ahead, or longing for another few months of summer, we all know that winter is coming – and we need to be ready. If your memory from last winter is full of expensive heat bills, freezing drafts, or frozen pipes, you might be thinking about winterizing your home this year. There are small fixes, larger projects, and major repairs that can all make a difference. It’s important to keep in mind that you don’t want to wait for the cold to get started; prep now and rest easy (and warmer) later.

Here are a few updates to consider if you’re thinking about winterizing your home:

Small fixes

  • Replace furnace filters
  • Clean your gutters
  • Install programmable thermostats
  • Use heavier curtains
  • Run fans in reverse (clockwise)
  • Update caulking around windows

Larger projects

  • Repair and replace roof insulation that’s missing, old, or damaged
  • Install storm doors
  • Insulate exposed piping
  • Schedule a boiler or furnace tune-up

Major updates

  • Complete any needed roof repairs
  • Install energy saving windows
  • Replace outdated boiler or furnace if needed
  • Invest in a generator if you’re prone to power-loss

You don’t have to do all of these things – pick and choose what you feel is right for your home at this time. Depending on your financial situation, it might be helpful to take a loan out to help pay for some of the larger projects.
