Let’s Get Moving
Congrats on your new home! Whether you’re moving around the corner, or across the country, nobody really enjoys packing. Here are some things you can do to ease the tension, and simplify the moving process!
A new home gives you a fresh beginning, so a few months before the big move, determine what you want to give away, throw away or sell (now is the time). If you’re selling, give yourself at least a month on ebay or Craigslist to complete transactions. Charity organizations will need a few weeks to schedule a pickup of things you’d like to give away. If you have a lot to get rid of, consider renting a dumpster.
Take all of your essentials, like your toothbrush, medication, a change of clothes, as well as pajamas, your laptop and possibly even small valuables and do the same for your family and pets, and put them in a bag that you’ll travel with, so you’ll have what you need, in case you can’t find it (or are too tired to even try)!
To save on the cost of packing supplies, use things you own to pack. Try using decorative baskets instead of purchasing cardboard boxes, and use clothing, towels, and socks in place of bubble wrap for glassware.
Pack room by room. This is easier on both ends. Label, label, label. Identify those boxes that have the essentials, like sheets, towels, pet supplies and the ever important coffee pot! This way you can get your new home in bare bones working order quickly.
The easiest way to pack a closet is to gather all the hangers together and wrap a large garbage bag around the grouping. Label and you’re done.
Take photos with your phone of how electronics are connected and how paintings and photos were hung.
Don’t forget the kids and the dog! Moving day is hectic, no matter how well you’ve planned it. Hire a babysitter or have a friend or relative take care of your children and your pets, so you can focus.
With proper time and organization, moving doesn’t have to be mayhem!
